Ninety minutes up the West Coast road, the Atlantic folds into a sheltered lagoon so improbably blue it looks borrowed from another latitude. Langebaan moves at the water’s pace: mornings of mirror-flat paddling, afternoons when the southeaster fills a sky with kites, evenings of grilled seafood eaten barefoot in the sand.

Warm, waist-deep and wind-blessed — among the finest kitesurfing waters on earth, and equally kind to paddleboards, hobie cats and first-time swimmers.
A protected sweep of fynbos, salt marsh and hidden beaches wrapping the lagoon. In August and September its plains erupt into the Cape’s famous wildflower bloom.
Open-air, toes-in-the-sand feasts are a local art form — course after course of mussels, snoek and crayfish cooked over coals, in the great tradition of Die Strandloper.
Close enough to Cape Town for a spontaneous Friday departure; far enough that the city dissolves by the first glimpse of turquoise. Club Mykonos, golf and quiet coves fill the days between.
